Thread: 55 West 46th St - International Gem Tower - by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill

I agree that the two corners of 6th Ave. on 46th and 47th sorely need to be redeveloped. By the way, the hotel on the 46th St. side is in a beautiful old building. Also, I like this project. The building itself is not magnificent but the junk that it replaces (especially on 47th Street) is horrific.

The lots on 46th street are that are part of the development
    “47, “49, “51, and “53.

“55” has the Burger King and Gary Barnett does NOT own this site so I am not sure if this will be part of the development

“57” the last lot towards 6th Avenue which is vacant allowedly-demolished, and just land Barnett owns it but if he can’t by “55” he will not be able to use this site “57”

I was wondering about that myself. I've passed by the block several times recently, and I believe there is a 'Coming Soon' sign on the second floor of the building housing the Burger King. I don't remember exactly what it was for, maybe a hair or nail salon. Scaffolding is covering the buildings just to the east, while a small empty lot sits between the Burger King and the Super 8.

and the lots on 47th street
    are
    "44. "46. "48-50 "52.

but he does NOT own "54. which is the last Building towards 6th Avenue that would be part of his development if he buys.

What I wrote in my previous post was basically an update, but I might walk by it again this afternoon to report on any further progress.

Does anyone know if Gershon Barnett received the subsidy that he sought from the city?

    With a
    Footprint-Plot size of. 130 x 200 = 26,000 s/f

Okay, I walked by the site this morning. Demoltion has already started on the buildings east of the Burger King. On the second floor of the Burger King building, there is a sign saying, "Coming Soon - Lily's Fashion Wear." The property to the west of that is actually not a completely empty lot. It seems the building was already demolished but the bare bones of the structure are still left intact.

On the Architect's website it lists this project as previous. I'm assuming this means it is no longer a consideration for the site. I seem to be in the miniority on this one, but I actually really liked its design.

No, I believe that is a current rendering for the project. While I don't care for the base at all, the tower itself is rather nice.
