That's the image I saw. It's horrible, as is RIU's Panama City eyesore.

The rendering on that site actually looks a little like the original plan for this site (below). Lets hope that rendering is just a general idea because it looks pretty terrible. Although at this point I just want to see that nasty condemned building removed and something built. We have had that scaffolding up for 3+ years now!

Isn't URI the proper abbreviation for University of Rhode Island?

Anyway, I'm not sure why they want a campus in New York City, but seeing how they're in the same state as RISD, couldn't they find someone to do a better design?

RIU Hotels and Resorts has nothing to do with URI ...
But i'd bet that even the worst student at RISD (my alma mater) could do a better job

Just add 'NE' to URI and you get an RIU Hotel.

New scaffolding finally up. Looks like demolition is on its way. Anybody know the final plan for this plot?

I suspect that it will look even lamer than that.

This area is like 6th between 23rd & 42nd, all you're gonna get is quick and basic architecture. Maybe Cook would break the trend at 855 Sixth?

According to Crain's, demolition of the existing bldg on this site is nearly complete:

RIU's hotels look like mierda, so I have very low expectations for this. Que sera, 8th Ave is a Dump anyway.

You'll be happy to know that the rendering is now wildly different, care of Curbed:

Since it will be a Spanish hotel, I will describe it in Spanish: mierda.

I'm glad to see Curbed is stealing images from YIMBY and improperly attributing them to other websites. The picture is crap, but that's not the point - using images without proper attribution is stealing and a violation of YIMBY's terms of use.
