Columbia’s Owen Steel will fabricate the steel for a new 71-story tower about to be built at the World Trade Center in New York City, company president David Zalesne confirmed Monday. Construction is beginning soon on Tower 3, Zalesne said, at the site of the worst terrorist attack in the history of the United States on Sept. 11, 2001. Owen also provided 10,000 tons of steel to create the backbone of the World Trade Center Memorial and Museum. Crews on Monday lifted the final steel beam of 4 World Trade Center into place, the first such milestone since the 16-acre site was decimated, The Associated Press reported. That tower is expected to open late next year and will house commercial offices and serve as the headquarters of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the trade center site.

He said later that if we see the core keep moving ahead (he also says this building will be built core-first), that'll be the solid evidence. Hopefully we see this thing rise, along with Two World Trade Center shortly thereafter.

I find it hard to believe that there's only one hit in Google news.

A few months ago, I read an interview with a representative of Tishman Construction, in which tower 3 was discussed. As I remember it, he said that all contracts were in place (not sure exactly what that means), and they were proceeding as if the entire building was under construction, and they would proceed beyond the "cap level" if they got the go-ahead from Silverstein.

If not, the core would be capped as previously agreed, and that was scheduled for this autumn.

By contractual agreement between Silverstein and the PA, the tower can't go ahead until certain leasing requirements are met; so I think that would be in the news before anything else.

I watched NY1 yesterday; Roger Clark had an interview with a guy from Silverstein Properties who outright said that 3 WTC would go ahead, with a target completion date of 2016. Not the most unbiased or reliable source, I know, but I certainly raised an eyebrow at that.

While I agree that skepticism is a good idea in this case, there are actually now at least two new separate articles from South Carolina based news organizations regarding this topic.

The news part of it seems to be that 4 WTC has topped out.

It doesn't state that Owen Steel just won a contract, just that the company will fabricate the steel.

From the April interview with Mike Mennella of Tishman Construction:

WSJ: On 3 World Trade Center, you’re building the podium, which is seven stories, right?

Mr. Mennella: We’re building the building that can stop at seven stores if necessary. It can continue on, and we’ve bought the project up to its roof.

WSJ: Meaning, you’ve ordered all the materials for the whole building?

Mr. Mennella: We’ve bought all the contracts for the entire building. We are staging the materials based on our instructions from the client.

At first I didn't like the idea of it having no cross bracing going up the main mass, but now I think it'll prove to be an asset, but only as long as the bracing on the side "wings" stays: they'll serve to emphasize and slenderize the main massing, making it look even taller when viewing it from the plaza.
