Thread: New York Nimby?

    Default New York Nimby?

My name is Ramses and I’m from the Netherlands. Currently I am writing an article about the highrises in Manhattan, most of my work is already done. But I’m missing a little part about movements against new highrises, I didn’t find any books about them in our local library. Is there someone on this forum who can tell me something about a NIMBY-movement in New York? How powerfull are they in your city? Or can someone give me some relevant links? Thank you very much in advance

Use the search function of this forum (near top of page), type in NIMBY, and prepare for an avalanche.

You came to the right place; it'll take you a week to read it all.

Look especially at "Gehry in Brooklyn" under NY Skyscrapers and Architecture: the chronicle of a NIMBY jamboree.

By MikeW --- I live in Manhattan, I've have lived through all of this. The people who are complaining are either NIMBYs who won't tolerate anything that might disrupt their lives in the slightest, luddites who hate any change or progress, or class warriors, people who resent anyone who does better then themselves. I give them no credence, nor do they deserve any. I keep hearing people pining for the bad old days, when there were 2000+ murders a year, the city was a toilet, the city government was broke, and everyone thought it would collapse like Newark or Detroit. Sorry, but they're idiots. Time and progress has passed them by, and they don't want to realize that they're the ones who need to get with the program.
