On 9/11 there was a temporary stage for a presentation of a series of free concerts in the WTC Plaza; the stage was set up just south of east entrance to the North Tower:

The David Parsons Dance Company was set to perform at 7PM that evening.

The previous evening the David Gordon Pick Up Company performed there.

The "Center Stage On Stage!" and the "Evening Starts On Stage!"
at the Twin Towers, June, July and August 2001...

I'm aware of the temp stage that was set up through summer. However, I decided to not depict it.

I agree --

I think it's really fantastic that you are creating the 3D WTC -- for all the derision it has received I always liked the plaza -- great place to people watch and for late night bike riding.

And the fountain with the gushing water flowing out and over the entire raised circle had a very entrancing effect.

I'm crazy for the view you've made up the side of 1WTC

Well, I never had the chance to see the plaza, but it seems that the plaza came alive only after it was refurbed in the 90's. The original looked far too sparse and did seem uninviting. The rehabbed plaza looked great and had I lived or traveled through the area I no doubt would have loved hanging out there as much as, if not more, than the plazas at the base of the Sears Tower or Aon Center.

I can only imagine how it would have looked and felt if Silverstein had built his planned upgrades. A grand entrance into the mall and a net-like structure between the towers and over the hotel that would have deflected the infamous Venturi Effect winds would have made it even better.

I imagine rendering the parallel lines must be a nightmare for a computer.

Actually, it's the reflective materials. The bare metal WTC facade and the windows eat huge amounts of computing cycles. Anti-aliasing the lines adds only a few seconds to the time, nothing compared to calculating all the bouncing and refracting light.

Please don't forget about the North Bridge. It was a critical part of the complex.

The one connecting the WTC and WFC over West Street. It was an important part of the complex pre-9/11, was needlessly disparaged by persons unfamiliar with the complex post-9/11, and to me any depiction of the complex would be incomplete and inaccurate without it.

Great work, STR. Do you know what the specific renovations were to the plaza in the 90's? I heard at one point a giant net over the plaza was considered to help alleviate drafts.

AFAIK The original marble was removed and replaced with grey and pink granite. That was the biggest change. 5 acres of stone isn't cheap. The spiral of benches and planters were added and more shops/carts were put in. Some kind of outdoor seating near 5WTC was added on or before this redux.

EDIT: An article on the plaza. Haven't read the whole thing though.
