Typically two hours. Sometimes three. You want to get the golden light preceeding sunset and the moody shadows of twilight. Ironically, the resulting photo is often more accurate than a single shot because most digital cameras, even expensive ones, have limited dynamic range compared to the human eye. This technique allows you to boost the dynamic range.
