Wow, that's a neat effect. How much time elapsed between the earliest and latest of those components?
Typically two hours. Sometimes three. You want to get the golden light preceeding sunset and the moody shadows of twilight. Ironically, the resulting photo is often more accurate than a single shot because most digital cameras, even expensive ones, have limited dynamic range compared to the human eye.
