Job/career question

Good afternoon all, I have a question that I am sure many of you probably will not be able to help me with but any amount of advice or information is welcomed. I will be off to college in a bit over a year and I have decided that I want to attend Columbia or NYU (I think I have a pretty good shot,and I know what my chances are statistically thank you) I have also decided that I am going to attend law school. I have been going back and forth for a while between International human rights law and international business, I chose law but I am still not 100% sure this is what I want to do, thought I know that I would be quite good at it. Anyway back to the point, I am worried about my salary after graduating from law school. I have been trying to find information on the salary of a human rights attorney. I have found very little, and what I have found is not very encouraging. Now I may be an idealist to a certain degree (I still believe that I can change the world) but I am also very realistic and practical. I recognize the fact that I will have to make a certain income to be able to live in the city and neighborhood I want and lead the lifestyle I want (Thinking at least 55-60,000 at entry level). So what I am asking is if anyone knows someone who is in the field of human rights law and knows how much this type of attorney makes or can find information on this I would really appreciate it. I am looking for the starting and mid-level average for this type of law. Once again thank you and I know I rambled but I was typing whatever came to mind. By the way if it wasn't already obvious I want to live in New York.

I have another question. Actually it's quite a few questions. First of all if I become a human rights lawyer and come to the realization that it is not working out can I switch to another field of law or is that not possible? If I cannot switch then is it possible for me to major or chose two different forms of law as my concentration in law school such as human rights and business law. I hope someone knows the answer to these questions and the ones asked in my original post Thanks again.

I have just one thing to say. I don't know anyone getting rich from trying the save or change the world... I hope you find what you are searching for in life... Most don't..

You've valid questions, but our answers won't really matter when you graduate in eight years or so. You have a good plan in life, but you need to slow down. Sit back and enjoy yourself, at least for your freshman year. You're going to have plenty of time to think about the future, especially considering that law schools prefer you to have some life experience before applying.

Ok I just had a spark of geniuses. This is what I am going to do, I am going to have a double major (which I was already planning on doing) I want my A masters degree in international business and Juris Doctor in International Human Rights Law. I know it sounds psychotic but I am one of those people that is at there absolute best working under pressure, lots of pressure. I know I will probably have a nervous break down by the time I am thirty but thats ok as long as I am doing what I love. This way, I will be happy and my future will be set or atleast the part of it that I can control, the rest of it we will just have to wait and see, and I am fine with that.

Couple things, in 8 years starting salaries and cost of living will be higher. At this moment it is possible to get 55K+ with an undergrad degree in NYC. As far as I know about law school you do not have to pick your exact type of law until AFTER you graduate and start working. Most of my friends have really picked their type of law based on their first job.
