These were always terrific relaxed events where NYers of all types could come together and enjoy some food, drink, music ...
And then the cell phone was invented ![]() I've pretty much given up on the experience, as it seems -- even after the performance begins and announcements have been made requesting that cell phones NOT be used -- that many folks are more interested in calling their as-of-yet-failed-to-arrive friends and trying to explain to them just exactly where in the crowd they can be found. Such tedious monologues of course interfere with the music -- which somehow is apparent to almost everyone in the Park except for the self-involved dozens who keep yapping into their phones, "We're over on the east side, by the big tree ..." Sit down, please. Shut your mouth and enjoy the music. Or stay home
