Feeding the Fatties

I sit on the subway and the kid across from me is under eight years old and clearly obese. Why is his mother handing him a bag of Doritos and holding the can of Coke for him to sip, because he has a chocolate bar in one hand and a Game Boy in the other?

Do parents not notice that their kids are fat? Can't they hear them breathign heavy because they are so heavy? Is it that hard to raise a kid that doesn't graze in the candy aisle?

Beauty and the Beast

I took the subway in the afternoon, when it was fairly empty. Across from me sat a guy, likely in his mid-30's. He had a huge birthmark covering nearly half his face. It was kind of reddish purple. I think this type of mark is called a "wine mark".

Besides the discoloration, the birthmark was raised, bumpy and had bright spots within it. It looked almoast swollen. I'm reluctant to call it deformed, but that just might be me. I imagine others would call him deformed.
