Mayor and Olympians Light Christmas Tree

A large crystal star is a new feature adorning the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, lighted on Tuesday night.
A holiday icon began brightening Rockefeller Center Tuesday night as Mayor Michael Bloomberg and three Olympians turned on the 30,000 lights decorating the center's famed Christmas tree.
Three Olympic gold winners -- ice skater Sarah Hughes and gymnasts Paul Hamm and Carly Patterson -- joined the mayor to light the tree at the annual ceremony in midtown Manhattan.
"It's absolutely amazing, absolutely amazing," said Susan Siewko, of Foxboro, Mass. "I've always watched it on TV but I've never seen it in real life."
This year's tree, a 9-ton, 71-foot-tall Norway spruce found on the property of a Suffern, N.Y. family, boasted a star topper for the first time in its 72-year history. The Swarovski-designed star is covered in 25,000 crystals and has a diameter of 9 1/2 feet.
Jessica Simpson, Nick Lachey, Hillary Duff, and Chris Isaak were on hand for the festivities, which were broadcast on NBC live from Rockefeller Plaza.
With temperatures in the 40s, thousands of people stood bundled inside police barricades for the ceremony.
"Christmas in New York is all about Rockefeller Center, the Christmas show, the skating and the lighting of the tree," said Bridget Cagney of Queens. "It wouldn't be Christmas in New York without that."
Jamie Wagner, a 21-year-old New York University student, said she enjoyed viewing the ceremony live.
"I'm from Iowa and so every year I watch it on TV," she said. "So I wanted to be here in person because last year I watched it from the sixth floor of Saks (Fifth Avenue) ... and they kicked me out right before it got lit."
The 40-foot wide tree was lifted into place on Nov. 11 and adorned with colored lights on five miles of wire. The tree is to remain illuminated until Jan. 6.
The first Rockefeller Center tree was put up in 1931 by workers helping to build the complex, and the first formal tree-lighting ceremony took place in 1933.
Last year, Bloomberg and members of the cast of "The West Wing" dedicated the lighting to American soldiers.

I know. I was just kidding. I think that the most beautiful event in NYC is in the new year's eve in Times Square. There are fireworks and the special lights "ball"Can't wait.
Never realized how big that trunk of the RC tree was until I looked back at those pics. :shock:
