    Default Banning of forum members

Some forum members expressed uneasiness about recent banning so I would like to offer some clarification.

I make use of two axioms when making administrative decisions: first – the forum is a place for CIVIL discussion, second – the forum is MODERATED.

The moderators ensure that the discussion is interesting, lively and civil. Understandably, not everyone would agree with every decision that moderators make. In such a case you can email me at webmaster@wirednewyork.com and complain about it.

At the same time I cannot allow anyone to ignore the moderators. If you disagree with moderator’s decision, you are free to express your disagreement; however you can not ignore that decision.

If a forum member would choose to ignore moderator’s decision, the only option to get attention of that forum member would be to ban him.

Generally speaking, the banning is reversible. The ban can be lifted once the issue is resolved. That is only true when the banned member was civil in his arguments. When the banned member sends me an email with the most filthy insults, it only confirms that I did a right decision by banning him.

Similarly, if I banned someone for trying to blackmail me with a purpose to remove one of the forum moderators, it’s a permanent ban, since I find such behavior uncivil and unacceptable.

    Default Banning of forum members

Thank you for this information. There is one forum member that was recently banned...

May I email you asking why he was banned, or is it really not my business?

I was banned from another forum
    http://www.aardvarktravel.net/chat/v...light=payphone
(way back when I was doing my payphone site).
I think those guys were a bit harsh. I find it's very easy for dumb situations to escalate.
You guys are a lot nicer, thank God!!

Please forward the spam message to me. Spamming is not allowed in any form on this forum. I will ban that user so there is no need for you to add him to Ignore List.

Thomas... you paint a picture as though you were hard done to. To set the record, perhaps I should point out that:

    1. Advertising is now allowed on our board.
    2. A message to this effect is posted at the top of each forum.
    3. You ignored this warning and posted ads.
    4. You were warned.
    5. You continued to post ads.
    6. In response to one warning, you posted the image at http://www.worldpayphones.com/europe/fra-exhib.jpg which is far from family friendly, and we have kids on our board as well as adults.

Harsh maybe, but IMO you were given ample warning and had a disregard for other members of the board.

From time to time it is neccesary to ban a member from a public forum area. Being a frequent bulletin board user especially a VB board, I been in lots of situations. As an administrator I have probably banned only 10 people in the years of my involvement.

In my opinion, Moderators should never be questioned... Generally their job is to maintain the board as they see fit and are assigned these right by the administrator. They work hard to keep the forum busy and would never ban a member unless it is really neccesary.

If your banned from a forum you have two options...

1 - visit again in the future to see if the ban has been lifted...
    or
2 - leave peacefully and learn from the experience this way you don't run into any other trouble on similar boards and/or forums.

The one thing you never do is re-register to ask why you have been banned...

If the administrator doesn't want you on the board, your IP address will eventually be banned and you will not be able to re-register again.

    just my two cents...

Seems like there's been some increased banning as of late...

Not trying to push anything, but I was "suspended" for "quoting".

In all due respect, I don't really see why "quoting" is a big thing. I complied as asked, becasue I'm bigger than to be banned again. But all I ask is that if there is a bigger issue than "quoting" going on, PM me.

I was banned once, and I never fully understood why that happened. Can learn from mistakes when you don't know what you did.

Alex, you should re-read my PM in which I have clearly stated that the reason you were banned is because you ignored my PM regarding the posting guidelines. Banning you was an effective tool to get your full attention.

Regarding your previous ban - I recommend you take an effort to understand the reasons you were banned. If you are going to understand that less than crystall clear, I am going to ban you again until you do.
