    Default 1 East 35th Street - Hotel - by H. Thomas O'Hara Architects

There's a building going up on the uptown side of 35th. St. just east of 5th. Ave. Does anybody know anything about it?

In the photo, it looks quite odd. The exterior looks extremely plain and heavy.

You're right. Kinda like an institution such as a courthouse or a hospital. WELCOME to NY, the hotbed of great design! We must truly be the envy of the world.

Here's the summary for this one:

    1 East 35th Street

A 28-story, 195 Room "Boutique Hotel" located 2 blocks from the Empire State Building in midtown Manhattan. Featured spaces include a double height lobby with mezzanine and bar, a full service restaurant with garden seating at the ground floor, and a sky lounge at the roof. The building contains 83,000 square feet and is served by 3 high-speed elevators at the core and 1 freight elevator at the street. It is of concrete column and flat plate construction and is clad in white marble-faced brick and aluminum panel. Through slender orthogonal massing and subdued materials the hotel presents itself as a classic New York City high rise from the exterior. The interior is modern in design and features high-tech audio-visual elements with strong emphasis on verticality.

    Budget: $26,000,000

Commerce Bank provided a $40 million financing package to 35th Street Associates LP, which is building a 91-unit residential apartment building at the site.

the building on fifth will be a hotel
and the the lot on 35th street will be condos.

OK, that's really confusing. Are you saying that there are two separate buildings here? So which is the one we see U/C above, the hotel or condo?

The facade shown here http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/sh...18&postcount=7 is clearly on 35th, not on 5th Ave., ergo: Condos

This design is done by H. Thomas O'Hara Architects and developed by Senior Living Options. They did that junk on W 42nd Street so expect something taller and just as attrocious here. One positive change is that the entire building is not set back from the street and not revealing the adjacent buildings' party walls like the previous design.

Funny how this building manages to look "extremely plain and heavy" while also oh-so insubstantial and flimsy. Plus the size/shape of the windows are just wrong wrong wrong.

Someone needs to put O'Hara and his minions out of their misery. There's no way any of them can enjoy their jobs designing (or worse, doing technical drawings of) crap, project after project.

..Then again, I suppose that would just make all the more work available for Monsieur Kondylis. Sigh.

Another view of this one (at right); note the beautiful blank wall facing 5th Ave.:

And yet another horrible building by some of the gang that is bringing us 1 E. 35th:
