Wow. Finally a residential tower with some integrity on 8th! It looks like they´ve put some thought into the transition to the brownstone block of 46th..."In addition there´s an annex townhouse building on the site that compliments the historic Restuarant Row." And ...no balconies... no exposed floor plates... Applause! Let´s hope for some nice retail/restaurant/bar at the ground floor.

Imagine also the 40-story tower going up on the McHale's site ...
In 5 years this stretch will be unrecognizable from what it's been for the past 40+ years.

That building looks awesome! One of nicest renderings to come along in quite a while in my opinion. There will be a new restaurant / catering in the smaller attached building I guess. Sounds like they may have a tenant in mind perhaps.
So this one is on the West corner at the entrance to restaurant row and the other proposed building replacing McHales is on the East side?
I guess the porn shops to the South can't hold out much longer. I bet they will be pushed South of 42nd Street where it's still quite skanky these days.
Is this the site with the Benegin's? I hope so, and I hope that the horrible building next to it with the NY Tours will be razed. Personally, I'd like to partake in the demolition!Originally Posted by lofter1
I walked by there and was disappointed to see that it's not the Benigin's site. Sadly, the building that will be razed, while in need of a cleaning, is decent. This follows the trend on 8th of razing the decent buildings and keeping the garbage. In fact, it appears from the rendering that the whole block on 8th will not be razed. The most disgusting structures on the north end of the block will remain!
I agree. I lived on that block of 46th for a while and know it well... if stuff has to be torn down, my only hope is that it´s replaced with something nice. Recently 8th has gotten really banal buildings as far as residential goes.... there´s no turning back and it´s a tragedy. The best solution would´ve been to have zoned the entire strip and then orchestrate development ...keeping the nice old tenements and filling in the empty lots and tearing down the really bad stuff. 46th and 8th was actually 4 nice old corners.... some creative artistic direction could´ve kept an atmospheric piece of old New York. But if stuff has got to go .... better this condo than one of those hideous brick "luxury" rentals further up the street

According to the description from the website, the ground floor will be exclusively for restaurant purposes only:
A forty-six story residential tower with retail spaces on the ground floor and public parking facilities in the cellar and subcellars. The building will be home to approximately 250 luxury condominiums with sizes ranging from 660 sf one bedrooms, 1,300 sf two-bedrooms, to 5,000 sf penthouses. The lower residential floors will incorporate a health club of approximately 5,400 sf with an adjoining terrace lounge. An additional 20,000 sf of commercial space will be located on the first and second floors. The proposed tower takes advantage of the 360 degree panoramic views of the Times Square district, the Hudson River and Central Park in the distance with 10 foot floor to ceiling heights and expansive glass openings. In addition, there is an annex townhouse building on the site that complements the historic Restaurant Row. The building contains 3,060 sf of restaurant space on the ground floor, 2800 sf of preparation area in the cellar and a catering hall of approximately 1,800 sf on the second floor. The remaining floors will contain condominium apartments.
